Nonlocal model for size effect in quasibrittle failure based on extreme value statistics

چکیده
A nonlocal generalization of Weibull theory is presented to predict the probability of failure of unnotched structures that reach the maximum load before a large crack forms, as is typical of the test of modulus of rupture. The probability of failure at a material point is assumed to be a power function of the average strain in the neighborhood of that point. For normal sizes, the deterministic theory is found to dominate the mean response and govern the size effect. But the probabilistic theory can provide the entire probability distribution. For extremely large beam sizes, the statistical size effect dominates and the mean prediction approaches asymptotically the classical Weibull size effect. This fundamental feature is discussed in relation to the existing stochastic finite element models. Comparison to the existing test data demonstrates a good agreement with the theory.

Revision of Reliability Concepts for Quasibrittle Structures and Size Effect on Probability Distribution of Structural Strength
The paper demonstrates the need for a fundamental revision of reliability concepts and design codes for quasibrittle heterogeneous structures, such as concrete structures failing due to concrete fracture or crushing (rather than reinforcement yielding), or large load-bearing fiber-composite structures for ships or aircraft, sea ice plates, etc. While ductile failure occurs simultaneously along ...
متن کاملComputation of Probability Distribution of Strength of Quasibrittle Structures Failing at Macrocrack Initiation
Engineering structures must be designed for an extremely low failure probability, Pf < 10 6. To determine the corresponding structural strength, a mechanics-based probability distribution model is required. Recent studies have shown that quasibrittle structures that fail at the macrocrack initiation from a single representative volume element (RVE) can be statistically modeled as a finite chain...
متن کاملActivation energy based extreme value statistics and size effect in brittle and quasibrittle fracture
Because the uncertainty in current empirical safety factors for structural strength is far larger than the relative errors of structural analysis, improvements in statistics offer great promise. One improvement, proposed here, is that, for quasibrittle structures of positive geometry, the understrength factors for structural safety cannot be constant but must be increased with structures size. ...
متن کاملStatistical size effect in quasibrittle materials: Computation and extreme value theory
This paper analyzes various modeling alternatives for the statistical size effect in quasibrittle structures. The role of reliability techniques, encompassing the classical reliability theory at random variables level, the theory of extreme values in Weibull form, and the stochastic finite element method with random strength field, is examined with a view toward capturing both the deterministic...
متن کاملNano-mechanics based modeling of lifetime distribution of quasibrittle structures
The statistics of structural lifetime under constant load are related to the statistics of structural strength. The safety factors applied to structural strength must ensure failure probability no larger than 10 , which is beyond the means of direct verification by histogram testing. For perfectly brittle materials, extrapolation from the mean and variance to such a small tail probability is no...
